Mercury's surface is much younger than the planet itself

Mercury's surface about 500 million years younger than the planet itself, the analysis apparatus shots Messenger.

Research findings are based on a calculation of Mercurian craters and their density compared with the density of craters on the moon. Since the age of lunar soil scientist known, the researchers were able to calculate the age along the lines of Mercury.

Calculations showed that the oldest portions of the surface of the planet is not older than 4.1 billion years, while the age of the celestial body is 4.5 billion years old.

Scientists explain this difference powerful volcanic activity, during which the entire surface of the planet, "refreshed". Volcanism, supported by the constant fall of the asteroid did not stop for 300-400 million years and coincided with the late heavy bombardment.
